Since long investigations showed that the land acquired was unsuitable for a coffee plantation , the RHPG exchanged 1,500 hectares of land for 500 hectares from the German East African Society ( DOAG ) . In this area , from April 1896, the coffee plantation " Ngambo " created . Despite numerous problems caused by disease , drought , a shortage of workers and pests that made it difficult to set up the plantation , the first coffee harvest was successfully harvested in 1900 .

In addition to the cultivation of coffee , experiments were carried out on the plantation " Magunga " with the cultivation of caoutchouc ( Manihot Glaziovii ) and cinchona . However , this remained an overall unsuccessful venture . The same applies to Montan - Gesellschaft m . b . H ., the the RHPG founded together with DOAG in 1895 after gold was found in Usambara ,
